Perfect Mountain Bike Rides in New South Wales, Australia

By: Kirsten Millar

Forrest, Victoria. Forrest can be a sleepy small town in south western Victoria which is home to some extraordinary mountain tracks. Once you've ridden trails including the Red carpet, Follow the Dog or Marriners Run you'll be already planning your subsequent trip back to these buff trails. The region has over 50 kilometres of singletrack all up and is home to 1 of Australia's finest mountain bike races, the Otway Odyssey.

Tathra, NSW. Tathra shares 3 characteristics in common with Forrest. Both towns are extremely small, each are really photogenic and each have pro-active mountain bike communities. Using the aid and support of all parts of the community such as the neighborhood aboriginal lands council, a wonderful piece of singletrack named the Doolagharl has been produced. It has been carved out of the side of a hill with fast swooping rollercoaster sections which can take a rider's breath away. Each now and then, you pop out along the ridge to take in a number of the stunning vistas. It is well worth the effort to get to this little piece of paradise.

Mt Stromlo, ACT. After the January Bushfires that devastated the capital city of Australia, the government in a clever piece of vision and foresight produced a million dollar multi-purpose facility that encompasses sports for example cross country running, equestrian, road criterium racing and needless to say, mountain biking. There are over 60km of trail at this facility all which are professionally created and cared for. It really is home to one of the best trails in Australia which snakes its way from the peak of the mountain. In the event you have not ridden Skyline and also the Luge trail here in Canberra, you might have not ridden the best. The best feature of the area, however, is it's capacity to cater for all levels of rider as well as hosting key events for example the Scott 24 hour.

There are many more scenic mountain bike rides in New South Wales, including the Blue Mountains which can be easily reached by train. Trails run from Wentworth Falls to Glenbrook via McMahons Lookout. Then from Glenbrook to Woodford via the Oaks Trail. Another fantastic ride is from Mt. Victoria to Lithgow.
